KERN RIVER ECOLOGY STUDY

Each student learns how to use advanced testing equipment, take precise measurements, and collect clean samples during this hands-on science discovery.  Each group would be in charge of a different area of the river system.
Using air conditioned vans the groups will travel up to 20 miles to gather samples from over 40 spots along the river and around lake Isabella. Samples will be taken from the surface, the bottom and each side of the river.  Students will test the water and carefully record the results, as the information is part of ongoing forest service research.
The recorded information will be collated with other student’s results to create a complete picture of the rivers eco-system.
Students will test for ammonia, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, pH, and collect laboratory samples to be tested for coliform and pathogens.  The goal is to identify the sources for the pollutants and contaminants by comparing the sample results with the rivers tributaries sources.   The area has a long history of mining, cattle ranching, farming, electric power production, and human settlement.  These influences are easily seen as students begin to compile test results.
