BUILDING STANDARDS

|
| 1/2"
steel staples are the most common way for participants
to access high ropes course elements. They are relatively
easy to install and provide excellent grips for climbing.
They should not be installed on the bottom 12' of any
pole or tree to prevent unauthorized access. removable
steps should be used instead. |
| Installation
consists of several steps. First the staple should be
pressed against the pole or tree to mark where the hole
will be drilled. Drilling the two parallel hole
is the most difficult part. If the hole are not parallel,
the installer will have to beat the living daylight out
of the staple to get it to the proper depth. The staple
may end up mangled, unsightly and penetrate deep enough
for adequate protection. |
| Once
the holes are drilled using a 3/8" or 7/16"
auger bit, the staple can be hammered in using a 3 - 5
lb hand sledge hammer. 6' long staples must not have more
than 2-1/2" left exposed. 8" staples should
not have more than 3" left exposed. Snapping a chalk
line along the length of the pole will help keep the line
of staples straight. The chalk line is much harder to
use when installing into trees. |
| The
distance between each staple will depend on the age and
ability level of the participants. 16" is alright
for ropes course used primarily with adults and for courses
used with children, the steps should be closer to 13"
apart. |
| Staples
are not acceptable as the primary safety points for static
courses. Through bolts should be installed every
3' - 4' on courses that feature static belay systems.
Staples are considered OK for instructor access clip-in
points. |
| Staple
installed in trees will gradually provide less and less
security as the tree grows to eventually cover the staple. |
