BELAY CABLE BOLTED TERMINATIONS

Cable Back-ups are absolutely necessary for ropes course belay cable bolted terminations.  Most of the through bolts are buried in the pole or tree and inaccessible for inspection. Because of this, a separate cable must be used as a back up for the through bolt.  There are several different ways to attach a back up that are acceptable.  The drawing above shows the most common method.  Refer to the ACCT standards manual for alternate back up methods.
Depending on the specific procedures for static belay ropes courses, back ups may be required on all cable terminations. It is recommended that clear PVC tubing be placed around the back up cable to protect it from damage due to exposure from chemicals used for treating poles.
When using a Thimble Eye bolt, the cable can be attached without a thimble eye. A thimble eye is necessary for terminations to a nut eye or oval eye bolts. A minimum of two cable clamps or fist grip clamps is required for the termination of the belay cable. Two clamps are also required for each end of the back up cable termination.
Refer to the cable clamp installation page for proper installation procedures and spacing.  If the through bolt shows any deformation, rust or bending, it should be replaced.   Please refer to the ACCT standards for specific requirements.
